SHENYANG, 2007 Cardiff Singer of the World, makes his Metropolitan Opera debut as Masetto in Don Giovanni this season. He is in his second year of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and The Juilliard School’s Opera Center.
Other engagements this season will include his New York recital debut in Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. Earlier this season in November, 2008, he performed Brahms’ Liebeslieder Walzer with James Levine and Daniel Barenboim in Carnegie Hall, and Fleishman’s Rothschild’s Violin with James Conlon at the Juilliard Opera Center. This past summer, Shenyang participated in the Young Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival.
He is a recipient of the 2008 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. He has won several First Place prizes, including the Fifth Shanghai International Opera Master Class in China, the Chamber Opera of Schloss Rheinsberg Opera Competition, the Verona L'Orfeo Singing Competition, and as Masetto in Don Giovanni at the International Opera Competition in Verona.
His operatic roles include Masetto in Don Giovanni at the Verona Philharmonic Theatre and the Zhou Xiaoyan International Opera Center in 2005, and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte in France and Germany with the Berliner Sibelius Orchestra in 2006. He has also taken part in the Eastern-Asia Music Festival in Korea and the Beijing Music Festival. He has sung in Rossini’s Stabat Mater at Santa Cecilia in Rome, conducted by Antonio Pappano.
